A “Beary” Special Delivery
Director of Residential Services Dr. Madelyne Douglas tells a wonderful story about how six abandoned teddy bears were rescued and came to live at Niles Home. Just before Christmas, stuffed bears began falling out of a delivery truck door, landing in snow and slush and being run over by cars. A bystander couldn’t stand to watch and rushed into the street and grabbed the bears. He figured if the bears would be safe anywhere, they’d be safe at Niles…and he wasn’t happy until he delivered them to our door!
Even after a good cleaning by Dr. Douglas, the bears are still a bit imperfect: some are missing an eye or two, some have severed ears, and all are a little the worse for wear. But Dr. Douglas plans to give the bears to the Niles children who can still appreciate how lovable they are. “We’ll find someone to love and care for you, flaws and all,“ she confides to the bears in her office, ”just as Niles loves and cares for our kids.”
