Rep. Cleaver Speaks at Black History Month Celebration
Black History Month was celebrated at Niles on April 8th with a program and luncheon for students, staff and visitors. Orchestrated by Clinical Director Jeanette Ighedosa, the event featured Niles Praise Dancers, songs, and portrayals of famous African-Americans by Niles youth.
Congressman Emanuel Cleaver II, a long-time Niles supporter with his wife Dianne, noted the many past contributions of African-Americans and said he was “standing on the backs of others” during his career as pastor, mayor and U.S. Congressman. In fact, Cleaver noted, his replacement in Congress – or even a future President – might be sitting right there in the room with him! Rep. Cleaver was presented a hand-made afghan for his Congressional office at the conclusion of his remarks.
The event concluded with a delicious soul food luncheon prepared by Niles kitchen staff.
